Compacted post-construction soils

Hello I have recently moved into a newly built home on an infill lot. The soil just about everywhere is very compacted to extremely compacted. There are many small, round stones and generally the soil seems good other than being compacted. Using an auger seems like a good method to loosen soil for creating planting areas (shrubs and perennials) and for trees as long as the hole is not dug too deep. But there are conflicting opinions about the use of augers. Using a mattox or pick for the area I have to cover is just not going to be an option for me. What about trenchers? Other ideas appreciated. Thanks!

I have a pineapple sage plant that I planted just this spring. I did not trim it often enough and it has gotten enormous. It is flowering too, something I didn't expect. Beautiful red flowers; quite striking in the fall season. (See picture.) Should I cut this all the way down to the ground for the winter? Trim it some? Or not touch it at all? Thanks.

leaves turning black

hi , i have an avocado plant which is about 6 month old and it was fine and growing perfect but the older leaves which grown while it was still in the water started to get weak (like loosing color and brown, dry tips).
after few weeks later other leaves started from their tips and sides turning black until all dropped of but trunk is still fine and green. roots are not dark or smelly (root rot) and i only water once its kind of dry. it's happening to my second avocado plant too. i have tried spraying soap water on the leaves too in case its an animal causing this, cutting the infected leaves, separating them from the rest but it doesn't seem to help. i was wondering what could be the cause of this? i live in England if that helps

Some had no root structure and som ha a clear carrot like root coming out of the tubers (see image). I am presently running an experiment by planting both types. will both grow into a plant and what is the carrot like root.
